action, actor, affect, alienation, altar, arena, audience, body, dance, effect, emancipation, event, carnival, class, collaboration, collective, costume, cruelty, desire, director, gesture, happening, idea, image, intervention, magic circle, mass, masquerade, mediation, movement, moving image, mystery, participation, performance, play-ground, power, practice, presence, process, protest, puppet, re-enactment, relation, screen, situation, social, space, spectacle, spectator, stage, staging, state, subversion, temple, text, theatricality, time, voice, zombie
Through talks, readings, live performances, screenings and masterclasses, ARE YOU ALIVE OR NOT? Looking at ART through the lens of THEATRE proposes itself as a ‘modus operandi’ for generating knowledge, ideas, questions, collaborations, happenings and things.
The project takes it's intial inspiration from a wish expressed in the introduction to Claire Bishop's book Artificial Hells, Participatory Art and the Politics of Spectatorship:
"It is hoped that these chapters might give momentum to rethinking the history of twentieth-century art through the lens of theatre rather than painting or the ready-made".
ACT 1 Preliminary program at the Rietveld Academie
In January and February and the beginning of March, the visual art and design students at the Rietveld Academie were offered to familiarize themselves with Artaud, Badiou, Bakhtin, Boal, Brecht, Debord and Rancière by means of theoretical infusions and a wide variety of artistic (research) projects, including their own.
ACT 2 Conference-festival & exhibition at De Brakke Grond
Around 35 individual and collaborative student projects will be displayed in the theatre of the Flemish Community in Amsterdam, De Brakke Grond, intersecting with a four-day symposium convened and moderated by invited curators:
Each day will follow it's own unique trajectory with audiovisual, participatory, performative, theatrical and theoretical contributions.
